About Yorkshire Foot & Ankle

Kurt Haendlmayer has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2010, specialising in Foot & Ankle surgery, practising in Spire Hospitals Elland and Methley Park in Yorkshire.

He is the lead Consultant Foot & Ankle Surgeon at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Training

Mr Haendlmayer graduated from University Berlin Medical School in 1991 with distinction, then worked as a junior doctor in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Berlin and Dresden. Whilst in Dresden, he completed a dissertation with the title “Diagnostics of Muscle Function following Total Hip Replacement” in association with the University Goettingen in Germany.

Mr Haendlmayer has always had a keen interest in Orthopaedic Surgery, Trauma and Sports Medicine. He completed his qualification in Sports and Exercise Medicine in Germany in 1996 after working in sports rehabilitation in Klinik Bavaria in Dresden.

Mr Haendlmayer then moved to Yorkshire, England in 1997 for basic surgical training within the Vale of York rotation. He passed his MRCS exam in 2002 to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Orthopaedic Surgery

After the successful completion of his basic surgical training, Mr Haendlmayer gained a place on the Yorkshire Deanery Orthopaedic training rotation with placements in Grimsby, Hull, Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate, Dewsbury and Wakefield.

He passed his fellowship exam of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma & Orthopaedics in 2008.

Fellowships

During his rotation in Trauma and Orthopaedics, Mr Haendlmayer developed a special interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery, culminating in a Fellowship in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust under the guidance of Prof. Nick Harris and Mr Ray Monkhouse.

This fellowship post led directly to the appointment as a substantive Orthopaedic Consultant at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust with the subspecialty Foot & Ankle Surgery in February 2010.
